The 6-foot-3 southpaw was signed out of a tryout camp in
Sumter, South Carolina, in 1991, and was 3-4 with a 6.38 ERA in 23 games through 1992. This year, though,
the 20-year-old grew and matured into a smart young hurler, and zoomed through the system from Macon of
the Class A South Atlantic League, where he was 8-2 with a 1.73 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 38 innings, all the way
to Double-A Greenville by season's end. On the way, he struck out 208 batters, second best in the minors, and
averaged a minor league-best 11.82 batters per nine innings. He was named the best pitching prospect in the
Sally League and his fastball was rated tops in the loop as well. But he doesn't get by on heat alone. "He keeps
the ball down in the strike zone," said Macon manager Randy Ingle. "He has good control and he got better each
time out." Batters hit just .206 against Wade at the three levels combined.
