To say the least, Wilson Alvarez' second major league start was a marked contrast to his
first. On Aug. 11, 1991, Alvarez, who had been called up from Double A Birmingham as an
emergency starter for the Chicago White Sox, fired a 7-0 no-hitter against the Baltimora
Orioles. The 21-year old lelthander struck out seven, walked five and was saved by a
spectacular, backhanded diving catch by center fielder Lance Johnson in the eighth inning
A crawd of 40,455 at Baltimore's Memonial Stadium stood and applauded Alvarez as he
retired their hometown team in the ninth. On his only other start, with the Texas Rangers in
July of 1989, Alvarez failed to retire any of the five foronto Biue Jay batters he faced
