In his seven-year major league career leading up to 1991, Bret Saberhager had just about
done it all. The Kansas City Royais' ace rightnander had won not one, but two Cy Young
Awards. He had twice won 20 games. In 1989 he led the Amencan League in both victories
(23) and ERA (2 16). In 1985 he was World Saries MVP with two wins and an 0 50 ERA
against the Cardinals. And he had overcore a serious arm injury to win Comeback Player of
the Year in 1987. Buthe had neverpitched a no-hitter until Aug. 26, 1991 when he turned the
trick to join that branch of pitoning immortals with a 7-0 gem against the Chicago White Sox.
Saberhagen walked two and struek out five and the only "taint to the no-nitter was a slicing
drive to leittield by the White Sox"Dan Pasova that was misjucged for en error by Royals'
leftfielder Kirk Gibson. Pasqua thought he should have had a hit, but the cilicial scorer tuled
otherwise. After retiring Frank Fhomas on a grounder to second for the final out,
Saberhagen was accorded a standing ovation from the Comiskey Park crowd of 25,164.
