It was a record that was inevitable, but still everyone wondered just when Rickey Henderson
would finally surpass Hall of Famer Lou Brock's all-time stoien base benchmark of 938. For
awhile, it looked as if Henderson might do it in the final days of the 1990 season, but nagging
injuries prevented him from playing much after his Oakland Athletics had clinched the
American League West pennant. Then, after the 1991 season got underway, Henderson was
sidelined again with a leg injury. But on May 1, before a near full house at Oakland's Alameda
County Comseum that included his mother, Bobbie, Henderson made a headlong dash from
second to third in the fourth inning, beating the throw by New York Yankee catcher Matt
Nokes. Thatwassteal No.939. With Brocklooking on, Henderson lifted the bag in the air and
proclaimed himself to be "the greatest of all time."
