The Baltimore Orioles' ironman shortstop put together one of the best all around seasons ever, batting. 323 with 34 homers, 114 RBI, 99 runs and committed only 11 errors in the field. Ripken previously won the AL MVP in 1983, but in that year, the Orioles won the American League pennant and world championship. It was because the '91 Orioles lost 99 games and finished sixth that Ripken's MVP selection drew fire from runner-up Cecil Fielder of the Detroit Tigers. Fielder led the majors in RBI with 133 and tied for the AL fead in homers (44). while having a major impact on the Tigers' second-place finish.
