He started the year with a flurry by saving all of the Cubs first four victories. But the magic came to an end in mid-June when Mitch twisted his right knee and was on the disabl- ed list for a portion of the season. He had nine saves at the time of his injury and was sorely miss- ed by the Cubs. An overpowering southpaw who relies strictly on a sizzling fastball, he made a tremendous impact on the '89 season. Mitch ranked second in the NL with 36 saves and first with 76 appearances. Op- ponents had a meager 238 BA against him, But it was his all-or-nothing delivery and exaggerated fall toward third base on his follow-through that endeared him so much to Cub fans.
