Thing." as Mitch is called. He started the year with
a flurry by saving all of the Cubs first four victories.
But the magic came to an end in mid June when
Mitch twisted his right knee and was on the disabl-
ed list for a portion of the season. He had nine
saves at the time of his injury and was sorely miss-
ed by the Cubs
An overpowering southpaw who relies strictly on
a sizzling fastball, he made a tremendous impact
on the '89 season. Mitch ranked second in the NL
with 36 saves and first with 76 appearances. Op-
ponents had a meager .238 BA against him, But it
was his all-or-nothing delivery and exaggerated fall
toward third base on his follow-through that
endeared him so much to Cub fans.
