unchartered territory when, on July 6, 1991, the
National League announced it was expanding to
Florida, awarding a franchise to Miami. Blockbuster
Video entrepreneur Wayne Huisenga singlehandedly
spearheaded and financed the Miami expansion
venture and, upon being awarded the franchise,
named it the Florida Marlins. The Marlins, who begin
play in 1993, will play their home games in Joe
Robbie Stadium, also the home of the NFL Miami
Dolphins. However, under Huisenga's direction, Joe
Robbie Stadium underwent re-construction in order
to convert the dimensions to make them more
conducive for baseball. Huisenga named Carl Barger,
previously President of the Pittsburgh Pirates, to
serve as President of the Marlins. Barger, in turn,
hired Montreal Expos general manager Dave Dom-
browski to serve as Marlins' GM. Upon accepting the
Marlins' GM post, Dombrowski brought to Florida
three of his key aides in Montreal, assistant GM Frank
Wren, scouting director Gary Hughes, and director of
player development John Boles.
