out of the Eagles' lineup before an injury to teammate Izel Jen-
kins provided him with a regular job at free safety. Starting the
next eight games, he wound up as the Eagles' interception lead-
er with five and was largely responsible for knocking three op-
posing quarterbacks out of the lineup with his hard hits. After
he was installed at free safety in a revamped Philadelphia sec-
ondary in Game No. 7 against the Dallas Cowboys, the Eagles
won five straight games. He tied for eighth on the team with 72
tackles, two of which were QB sacks on safety blitzes. Hopkins
was a second-round pick out of Southern Methodist in 1983.
