became the Padres' regular second baseman shortly into the
88 season. Over the last two months of the year, Roberto bat-
ted .316. He ended the season topping the Padres in runs,
doubles and sacrifices (16), while ranking second in hits,
triples and stolen bases. His slick moves around the bag were
a big factor in the Padres leading the NL in double plays.
Roberto's father, Sandy, was a 15-year major leaguer and is
the Padres' third base coach, while his brother, Sandy, Jr., is
an outstanding catching prospect.
