reliever for the Indians in '89. Mixing a 90-mph fastball with a
good overhand curve, a slider and a forkball, he had his best
season in '88 as he reached career highs in wins, ERA, starts,
innings pitched and strikeouts. Rich was particularly effective
after a session on the disabled list with a pulled muscle in his
right side in mid-June. In his first four starts after being ac-
tivated, he won three and chalked up an impressive 2.95 ERA.
Rich was drafted by the Twins way down in the 26th round in
'80. As a starter in his first six minor league seasons, he won
60 games and lost 49, with 47 complete games.
