In '88, Rafael played in a career-high number of games as he led all NL shortstops in tielding, depriving Ozzie Smith of a fitth straight title. It was the first fielding champion- ship for a Pirate shortstop in eight years. Rafael, a light hitter, signed with the Pirates as a free agent in '80, and quickly displayed his defensive magic as he top- ped all Carolina League shortstops in putouts in '81.
