He started off by ranking second in the Vene- zuelan Winter League with a .330 BA, while amassing nine homers and 37 RBIs. Then he hit .385 and three home runs in the Caribbean World Series, and was named the Series MVP. After appearing on the Cubs' Opening Day roster, Phil bounced back and forth between lowa and Chicago a couple of times. He went on the DL once, and ended the American Association season with a .300 BA and 13 home runs in 84 games. In early September, Phil was traded to the Padres and spent the rest of the NL season with them.
