In '89, he batted a solid .294 at Double-A Birmingham, which would have tied him for sixth place in the league batting race if he had had enough at bats. Matt, whose grandfather, Lennie, was a reserve infielder for the Cubs in the 40s, was a teammate of Scott Bankhead, Walt Weiss and B.J. Surhoff at North Carolina. He was drafted by the White Sox in the seventh round in '86.
