He was traded from the Tigers toward the end of spring training, despite a 3-0 record with a 1.96 ERA, and became a regular starter for the White Sox. Eric gained his first victory of the regular season on a three-hit, 1-0 shutout over the Mariners. He was used mainly as a middie reliever by the Tigers after they acquired him from the Giants at the end of '85. A hard- thrower with an excellent slider, Eric is aggressive and not afraid to pitch inside. "Very few pitchers llke to pitch inside anymore," said Tiger manager Sparky Anderson. "They're afraid they might hit someone. Eric doesn't worry about it."
