when he was disabled for two months by arthroscopic surgery
on his right shoulder in June. The best athlete on the Red Sox
and a multi-talented center fielder, he is one of the most com-
plete players in baseball. "He's the best young player in the
game today," said Ranger manager Bobby Valentine. "Other
guys can do one or two things well. He can do it all."
Showing exceptional speed and surprising power, Ellis had
an outstanding rookie season in '87. He and Devon White were
the first rookies in 10 years to hit 20 homers and steal 20
bases. Ellis also tied a record with two grand slams, and
grounded into only one double play in 72 DP situations.
