runs in on batters, is one of the most impressive young short
men in the AL. He finished second in AL Rookie of the Year
voting in '88, and led all major league rookies with 17 saves
and the fewest runners allowed per nine innings (9.47). Bryan
was especially tough on lefthanded hitters; he mowed down
36 in a row, the longest string in the majors. All told, opposing
batters hit a puny .214 against him.
Bryan, who also hurls a hard forkball, was signed by the
Angels at a tryout camp in '84 while playing outfield for a na-
tionally ranked team in a slo-pitch softball league.
