in '89. Extremely quick behind the plate, with an assault
weapon for an arm, he gunned down 13 of the first 29 runners
attempting to steal on him. He also had his first four-hit game
and started in his first All-Star Game.
In '88, only his second full major league season, Benny
gained his first Gold Glove as he threw out a remarkable 45
percent of would-be base stealers. Even more staggering, he
nailed 65 percent (11 of 17) while throwing from his knees.
Benny also picked off seven men at second base and two at
first. He was the unanimous '87 NL Rookie of the Year as he
set a rookie mark with a 34-game hitting streak.
